Ikema island is located to the West of Miyako Island.
It is blessed with a rich natural environment, beautiful sea, and a traditional culture that has existed since ancient times. The people of the island lived and continue to live in harmony with the natural environment, particularly through fishing.
We of the Ikema Fisheries Cooperative aim to protect the nature and traditions of the island, including the coral reefs of Yabiji lying offshore, seeking to pass on the traditions of the island to the next generation and to spread the word about its beauty and charms.
Take a trip to see the coral reefs of Yabiji, enjoy the spectacular scenery, and experience fishing with Ikema’s fishermen.

Trip Report
Yabiji, Japan’s largest group of coral reefs, is a vast area measuring 17 Km from North to South, and approximately 6.5 Km from East to West. It lies 15 Km off the Northeast coast of Ikema Island.
This scenic spot is known locally as the “Phantom Continent”, because the reefs become visible above the surface of the sea only during low spring tides.
The Ikema Fisheries Cooperative provides tours of Yabiji. You can enjoy the spectacular scenery and do some fishing if you wish under the guidance of a local fisherman who will be a member of the Ikema Fisheries Cooperative Association.
